new cell phone social network The SWARM

A researcher Christine Satchell at the Interaction Design Lab at University of Melbourne has created a cell phone-based social networking system called THE SWARM.

It lets you inform groups of people (friends, co-workers, in-laws, etc.) where you are and/or what you’re doing, which lets then know if it’s OK to call you, or where they can find you. For example, when you’re in a meeting, you can inform co-workers which conference room you’re in, and at the same time, let friends know you’re not available for personal calls. After work, you can inform co-workers you’re unavailable, but let friends know exactly which pub you’re in.
