Seagate launched the 1TB Central Axis network-attached storage for home use. The device serves storage space for both Mac OS X and Windows systems on the local network and also as a remote storage server over the Internet.
The Maxtor Central Axis also serves as an automatic media server for any DLNA- or UPnP-based device, including PS3, Xbox 360, and Nokia Nseries phones that will automatically find the Central Axis and can stream content directly from its hard drive.
Seagate bundles software to automate backup for Windows PCs, password-protect folders, and gives the drive two USB ports that can be used both for a direct connection as well as printer sharing or the addition of extra space. Maxtor Central Axis is expected to ship in July for $330.
