Intel announces its first SSD

Intel has announced its Mainstream series of SSD drives for notebook and desktop clients. The SSD will be available in 1.8- and 2.5-inch sizes, and rely on MLC (multi-level cell) NAND memory that will hopefully translate to a lower cost-per-bit for the consumer.

Along with the 80GB drive, Intel also sent over its own system benchmarks that show a 50 percent improvement in system performance as well as a 9x improvement in HDD performance. Intel hasn’t released pricing yet but most current 64GB SSDs is about $800.

Wow…that was like $12.5 per GB for 64GB SSD. It’s still not at consumer level. Just hope SSD will come to the consumer price very soon.
