Seagate has unveiled a new level of security for work-oriented hard drives by shipping its first Self-Encrypted Drives (SED). The Cheetah 15K.7, Constellation, Savvio 10K.3 and Savvio 15K.2 all automatically protect data that isn’t immediately being used. They all have an encryption engine that processes information on the fly but without slowing down the drives’ actual speed.
The addition makes any drive’s data all but inaccessible without authorization and prevents thieves from recovering information even if they have access to undelete tools. Seagate is making the drives available to resellers and system builders and pricing is unknown yet.
