Fastmac today launched what it claims is the first and only Blu-Ray optical drive upgrade for Apple’s PowerBook, iBook, and MacBook Pro laptops. The new slimline, slot loading drive uses one of the fastest and most compatible Blu-ray mechanisms to provide up to 50GB of storage on one disk, according to FastMac, without sacrificing compatibility with standard DVDs and CDs.

Lite-On just announces a new slim external DVD rewriter, SSM-85H5SX. This is the new drive which is able to read and write all DVD and CD format in the market. What is more interesting is that it is equipped with LightScribe technology. The only downside is it does not supper reading and writing Blu-Ray and HD-DVD discs.

LG has launched a new 18X External DVD Writer with Light Scribe- LG GSA-E40L in Europe market. The new LG GSA-E40N USB 2.0 drive external Super-multi DVD burner supports 18x writing on DVD±R media, 10x on DVD±R DL and 12x on DVD-RAM. CD-Rs can be burned at 48x maximum, while the recording speed for CD-RW is 32x.

Panasonic has unveiled a USB powered DVD super multi drive, the LF-P968C. The DVD burner sports few softwares such as lighting software “B’s Recorder GOLD 9 BASIC”, DVD playback software “PowerDVD 7”, and DVD authoring software “PowerProducer 3”. It supports Windows Vista, and can write dual layer DVD±R at 4x, DVD±R at 8x, DVD±RW at 6x, DVD-RAM at 5x, CD-R at 24x, and CD-RW at 16x.

The JVC HD Everio HD Hard Disk Camcorder GZ-HD7 can also be connected via a USB 2.0 cable to an optional JVC HD Everio Share Station CU-VD40, which is controlled directly through the camcorder. The Share Station can be used to create HD data discs to archive HD video clip files. The Share Station also plays these HD data discs. There are several options for selecting clips to be burned to disc. The Share Station archives these HD video clip programs and files to both DVD-R and DVD-RW 12cm discs, recording approximately 40 minutes in full HD on an 8.5GB dual-layer DVD-R disc. It also allows for the creation of digital stills in a JPEG format.
