Samsung Unveils Galaxy Mega 5.8, 6.3
Samsung has officially announce Galaxy Mega 5.8 and 6.3. The new ‘phablets’ screen size are bigger than Galaxy Note 2 but does not offers a stylus input. The new Mega range omit quad-core CPUs for dual-core chips and forgo high-resolution OLED displays for lower resolution TFT LCD displays. However, each also incorporates the ‘Air View’ feature that will debut on the new Galaxy S 4, and will run a number of software tweaks also featured on the new flagship handset.
The Galaxy Mega 6.3 centers on 720p 6.3-inch LCD display while an unspecified 1.7GHz dual-core processor matched with 1.5GB of RAM powers it. It includes an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 1.9-megapixel front shooter with a range of software enhancements including ‘beauty face,’ ‘best photo,’ ‘best face,’ and ‘drama shot.’ Connectivity is highlighted by 4G LTE support, as well as support for Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth 4.0, USB 2.0, GPS + GLONASS, NFC and MHL. On board storage will be available in either 8GB or 16GB versions, with built-in support for microSD expansion up to 64GB. The device weighs 199 grams and includes a 3,200mAh battery.
The Galaxy Mega 5.8 drops the screen size to 5.8-inches and the resolution to qHD. The dual-core processor is also capped at 1.4GHz, but still utilizes 1.5GB of system RAM. It retains the same 8-megapixel and 1.9-megapixel cameras, but limits connectivity to 3G and Wi-Fi 802.11n. However, the Mega 5.8 retains support for Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth 4.0, USB 2.0 and GPS + GLONASS. On board storage is limited to 8GB, however, like the Mega 6.3, it supports microSD card expansion up to 64GB. The Galaxy Mega 5.8 weighs in at 182 grams and sports a 2,600mAh battery. Both the Galaxy Mega 5.8 and 6.3 will ship with Android 4.2 ‘Jelly Bean’ on board.
Both the Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 and 6.3 will ship in May with Europe and Russia the early beneficiaries. A global rollout in select markets will follow as will pricing details.
