Seagate has launched the world’s first 3 Terabyte (TB) external desktop drive. The Seagate3TB GoFlex Desk external drive couples immense capacity with the flexibility to adapt the drive’s USB 2.0 interface to a USB 3.0 or FireWire 800 connection to meet varying performance and transfer speed needs. Consumers can easily create, store and access content from either a Windows or Mac OS X computer on the GoFlex Desk external drive, thanks to an included NTFS driver for Mac. With 3TB of capacity people can store up to 120 HD movies, 1,500 video games, thousands of photos or countless hours of digital music.

Toshiba announces on Tuesday added a 640GB drive to its notebook-sized GSX hard drives. With two platters to make up its entire storage, the 5,400RPM disk is thin enough at 9.5mm tall to fit in thin-and-light notebooks and also gets incidental boosts from the increased density. Toshiba claims that it’s faster, with “significant” speed-ups through the reduced amount of time finding data, and that it consumes 28 percent less power compared to earlier models.

Samsung announced its latest 1.5TB hard disk drive named EcoGreen F2. The new hard drive comes with increased recording density and reduced number of disks (500GB per disk), and more power efficient by supporting a capacity up to 1.5TB with 3 disks.

Verbatim announced two new Quad Interface 3.5-inch hard drives with capacities of 500GB and 1TB. The pro audio/video-grade storage and backup solutions offer Mac and PC users universal connectivity with plug and play support for all four interfaces: USB 2.0, FireWire 400, FireWire 800 and eSATA II (external Serial ATA II). All the hard drives feature a 7200rpm spindle speed and 32MB of cache memory to optimize performance in addition to a silent cooling fan.
