According to Nikon Rumors, Nikon will be scheduled a press conference for its release of an anticipated upgrade to the D80. One claims that the media is receiving invitations to a gathering to be held on September 3rd. Nikon often announces some or all of its new cameras for the show in advance but only occasionally uses its own conferences to announce products outside of the normal cycle, suggesting a major release.

The nature of the release isn’t mentioned by the alleged source, though pro photographer Thom Hogan and others suggest that the D80’s replacement (often referred to as the D90) is a likely candidate for the event.
